Not Quite the “Riot House”, but Close

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Woo HA!  We had ourselves quite the rock and roll weekend, how about you?

On Friday we ventured to Aurora for a private party.  Correction: most of us went to Aurora.  The Deuce somehow missed the “Aurora” memo and called us from “Avon” to say he couldn’t find the gig.

A short, panic-stricken while later, our favorite guitar slinger managed to get across town to the right place.  We proceeded to get all hot and sweaty while rocking out to a room full of crazed party-goers.  It was allegedly a birthday party for a couple lovely ladies, but deep down we think it was just an excuse to get crazy in private with Skinny Moo!

NOTE to Aurora party people: Remember, you can get crazy with Skinny Moo in public on November 21st at the Greenville Inn!

On Saturday, after recovering our wits, we hauled our traveling music emporium to the Cleveland Arcade, home to the Hyatt Regency and the conclusion of this year’s Cleveland Beer Week, touchingly called Brewzilla.  While there hasn’t been a mud shark incident, the Arcade is something of our own “Riot House“.  Each time we play there we seem to wind up having some… issues.

This time around, everything was great until a few songs into our third set.  We had been situated on the second floor balcony, far above the throngs of craft-beer tasters.  We (and our PA) were close, however, to the rooms at our end of the Arcade.  Maybe a little too close.  A few songs into the last set, we each noticed hotel security, and possibly the hotel manager, standing motionless behind us.

Um, zoinks.

Was it the array of beverage containers (we swear, they were all promos from the, err, glassware vendors at the show)?  Was it the stirring low frequencies of Herr Baron Von Braune Noteh?  Was it the ear-shredding rock emanating from the Deuce’s JCM 800?

Frankly, we’re not sure.  The bottom line is that we had to shut down, after doing a whispery and truncated version of Weezer’s “Beverly Hills”, into which we were planning to insert a special tribute to Brewzilla.  *sigh*

There may have been some complaints about the proximity of the music.  We just have to assume that those people don’t like music, beer, or Cleveland for that matter.

NOTE to angry hotel-stayers: Beer = good.  Music = Better.  Both = happy happy! Please seek help!

All kidding aside, we had a great time, and hope no one was permanently damaged by the evening.  As always, the Winking Lizard puts on a well-organized and classy event, and we’re always grateful to be a part of it.  Here’s to future Brewzilla action!

Rocking the Hall

Monday, October 19th, 2009

It was a whirlwind of a weekend, and we’re still collecting ourselves. We’ve got lots of pics to sort through, and we’re looking forward to sharing the details of our show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  As you can see it was eventful – Slider even sat in on a song.

Thanks to Cleveland Magazine for choosing Skinny Moo as one of the best cover bands in Cleveland. And thanks to everyone who came out to the Best of Cleveland party – it was a blast!

We’ll post updates as soon as we’ve sorted through all the crazy media! Meanwhile, you might enjoy this article about us from the Lake County News Herald.

Skinny Moo on Fox 8

Incredibly, Skinny Moo was up at the crack of dawn (a time we like to refer to around Moo HQ as “0-dark-30”).  We arrived at the Fox 8 Studios near downtown Cleveland in the morning darkness, and got our gear into the studio.  As with our previous appearances on the show, we set up mostly during commercial breaks.

We drank coffee.  The Deuce spilled coffee on Jay.  Jay changed his shirt.  It was all eerily familiar.

We did five “bumps” today, small one-minute segments of songs that served as transitions between the show and commercials.  Fox promoted our recent “Best of Cleveland” accolade from Cleveland Magazine, along with the party this Friday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jay texted Todd Meany during one of the songs, displaying surprising multi-tasking skills.  Why Jay can’t sing and play a tambourine is still beyond us.

kenny_glovesWe even had a chance to run into our favorite feature reporter Kenny Crumpton on our way out.  He was not wearing rubber gloves at the time, which was a relief.  Hopefully we’ll catch up with him again at the Rock Hall on Friday!

We’ll get some videos posted soon.  And lastly we wanted to assure “michelle”, who posted this comment on the Fox 8 Morning Show Graffiti Board…

…that Skinny Moo is indeed comprised of alains from the planet FunkFunk.  We’ve always been very up-front about that, so hopefully we haven’t offended anyone’s sensibilities.

UPDATE: Pics are posted here.

UPDATE 2: Here’s the last bump we did: “I Can’t Get Next To You” by the Temptations (1969)

Fox 8 Morning Show and the Hot List

Monday, October 5th, 2009

It’s been a while since we had the opportunity to visit our friends at Fox 8, and we’re excited to be returning to the studio bright and early on Monday October 12th.

Fox Rocks

We’ll play a number of  “bumps” (one minute bits of music when the show is going to or coming back from commercials), and we’ll be talking about our recent ‘best of’ mention in Cleveland Magazine.

We’re also on the list of candidates for the Fox 8 Hot List (in excellent company – lots of great bands and artists are listed).  We’d love to have your vote!  You can cast your vote here.

UPDATE: Thanks to Heather at the Fox 8 hot list for helping us hot list n00bs get the voting URL right!
